A Look at What’s Next for Smartsheet

Smartsheet has established itself as a leader in work execution software, empowering teams to collaborate effectively on projects and tasks. However, based on the company’s product roadmap, it’s clear Smartsheet has ambitious plans to expand the capabilities and impact of its platform. Over the next couple of years, Smartsheet aims to dramatically increase scale, accelerate performance, simplify dashboards, expand integrations, and incorporate AI to transform work execution.

Massive Gains in Scale

As work has gone digital, the breadth and complexity of projects has grown exponentially. Smartsheet is enhancing its platform to support gigantic projects spanning thousands of collaborators.

Estimated for release in Q4 2023, Smartsheet will allow up to 250,000 cell links per sheet, enabling vast connectivity. Early 2025 goals include 10 million cells per sheet and 1 million rows per sheet – 50X more than current limits. Teams will be able to build vast, interconnected plans at a whole new scope.

Smartsheet is also improving multi-sheet capabilities for large initiatives. Users will soon attach multiple intake sheets to blueprints to gather inputs from large teams. In the next couple years, Smartsheet will support over 10,000 active Control Center projects for managing massive programs with many moving parts.

Blazing Fast Performance

Bigger projects require faster performance to avoid frustration. Smartsheet is implementing major improvements under the hood to keep collaboration smooth regardless of project size.

Formulas will calculate 10X faster (estimated Q4 2023 release) through asynchronous recalculation. By early 2025, Smartsheet aims to load all sheets in under 2 seconds and reduce save times by 10X – to under 2 seconds for the 99th percentile user and 5 seconds for the 99.9th percentile. Performance will rival desktop speed.

Simplified Dashboards

Data-rich dashboards are crucial for tracking projects, but can be time consuming to build. Smartsheet is adding power features to help all users quickly create polished, professional dashboards.

Estimated for release in Sept 2023, Smartsheet enables multi-widget editing with themes for consistent styling. Subsequent themes will customize fonts, charts, and more. Later in 2023, users will be able to tweak dashboard layout with margin, orientation, spacing, and padding options.

These capabilities will make it easy for anyone to build engaging dashboards that effectively communicate key metrics and progress.

Integrated Resource Management

Resource management is a vital aspect of PPM, and Smartsheet is making it more accessible to project managers and teams. With Workload Heatmaps and Workload Scheduling
Smartsheet is bringing workload management to everyone by introducing the Workload Heatmap and Workload Schedule features. Project managers can now easily view who is working on what and address overallocation directly within their project sheets. This empowers teams to make informed decisions about resource allocation and optimize project schedules.

AI to Radically Simplify Work

Smartsheet is infusing AI throughout its platform to automate routine work and generate key insights. With Generative AI, users will be able to generate content, analyze data, and create formulas, text summaries, and charts simply by asking.

AI will enable teams to focus time on substantive work while Smartsheet handles repetitive tasks. Users will spend less time manipulating data and more time putting insights to work.

Smartsheet’s product roadmap demonstrates its ambitions to redefine work connectivity and intelligence. With massive scale, lightning speed, simplified dashboards, expanded integrations, and imbedded AI, Smartsheet aims to become the platform for managing work at the largest organizations. Over the next couple years, Smartsheet has plans to radically transform work execution – setting the stage for organizations to achieve unprecedented alignment and impact.
